Internal Application: What can I expect?

Once you apply for an internal role, you’ll receive an e-mail requesting you complete an Equal Opportunity Compliance form. Next, in most cases the Associate Experience team will schedule an interview between you and the applicable hiring manager.

Additional Considerations

Have you shared you’re applying for this role with your current manager? While this can be an awkward situation, it’s an even trickier situation when your manager learns of your application from someone other than you.

This is your time to share your successes in your current role and express how your skills and talents are well suited for the role to which you are applying.

Even though your interview is internal, please prepare like it’s a first impression:

  • Wear appropriate attire
  • Ensure background is professional
  • Prepare questions in advance
  • Send a follow up note reiterating your fit for the role

We know you likely have questions prepared for the hiring manager, but here are a few to add to your list:

  • What are the next steps in the selection process?
  • When do you expect to make a decision?
  • Discuss the salary range for the role – an internal movement could be an increase, decrease or lateral change

Selection Decision

Finally, regardless of the outcome, the hiring manager will meet with you once a selection decision is made to either offer you the role or discuss why you are not the best fit at this time. If you are selected for the role, you’ll work with your current and new manager to determine the best transition process for your new role.

  • Work with your current leader to tie up any loose ends. You may have a transition period so be sure to talk through those details/plans as appropriate
  • Update your Associate Understanding Profile. Your new leader will have access on your transition date.
  • Connect with a coach on Coaching Loft. They can assist with best practices on job transitions.
  • Maintain your current relationships. Your current leader can still be a resource for you, even after you’ve transitioned to your new role.
