The pain of paying: Exploring the consumer push for price transparency in healthcare

The call for price transparency has dogged healthcare for decades, but it has recently morphed into one of the hottest topics in the industry. New federal mandates, media reports of ‘surprise billing’, and provider reluctance to deal with the time, energy, and motivation required to be more price transparent have only fanned the flames.

Price transparency is a complex issue weaved by many different stakeholders into the massive mess that has cast a shadow over the entire industry of healthcare. In this cacophony it can be easy to drown out one voice in particular: the consumer.

Join us as we study the perspective of healthcare consumers who want to know, not only how much they pay for care, but why they pay it. We’ll explore consumer findings on the issue with aim to better understand the outside call to share prices, and what it means for future healthcare utilization. Along the way we’ll discuss the role hospitals and health systems can play in solving this longstanding challenge.
